Book Review On Tavriss The Mis Essay - 2027 Words

Carol Tavrisamp;#8217;s The Mismeasure of Women offers the reader insight into the inequality and problems women face in society. I approached this book with the assumption that it would glorify women and belittle men. I figured that the author would blame all the problems women face on men. After completing the book I had a very different opinion. The author looked to society for the actual source of womenamp;#8217;s inequality and never placed the blame on any one group of people. The book explains that although there are differences in the behavior of men and women in certain situations both types of behavior are equal and for the most part influenced by society. It is for that reason I recommend The Mismeasure of Women for both†¦show more content†¦However both those conditions are now treated with drugs like diseases. The author also explains some of the other stereotypes associated with women. These include the ideas that women are the caregivers and men are the warriors. Tavris stresses this point throughout the entire book. This is a stereotype against both men and women. Tavris counters these stereotypes by bringing in facts from scientific studies. It turns out that women and men are generally the same in these two areas if they have to be. It depends on other stimuli such as money, power, and prestige. These stereotypes cause men and women to act in certain ways, and suppress certain emotions in order to comply with societies idea of normal behavior. Tavris points out that womenamp;#8217;s inequality has to do with inequality of power and money rather than gender. Women are overlooked in medical studies according to Tavris. This occurs even when the medical study will mostly affect women. This further asserts the books point that men are the norm of society. The scientistamp;#8217;s assume that the treatments that benefit men will also benefit women. Of course the above paragraphs only represent a portion of the books arguments but they all support the authors general point. That point is that women need to overcome differences in power and opportunity rather than in gender to obtain inequality. Introduction The author, Magana-Gomez, critically analyzed the risk assessment methods of transgenic food for human nutrition and health in the paper, â€Å"Risk assessment of genetically modified crops for nutrition and health†. Magana reviewed various modes including different feeding period, animal modes and parameters in the paper published in 2011 by Nutrition Reviews (Magana G, 2009). In consistent with his studies, negative effects of GM food were identified â€Å"at molecular and microscopic levels†. However, with our entry into the 21st century, genetically modified foods have undergone even faster development. However, there are also many doubts about the safety of genetically modified foods. Therefore, genetically modified foods have become a hot topic issue. Personally, although there are many controversies about GM food, I still insist on the research and promotion of transgenic food due to its diverse benefits. Views According to Curieux-Belfond CL, he could identify the factors that deserve consideration before â€Å"commercialization and promotion of transgenic food† (182). In this paper, â€Å"Factors to condider before production and commercialization of aquatic genetically modified organisms: the case of transgenic salmon†, the author took transgenic salmon as an example, in which Curieux-Belfond examined the corresponding impacts in terms of aquaculture, wildlife, ecosystem and human health. The paper published in 2011 by Evironmental Science Policy suggested that GM food undoubtedly contributed to economic benefits without exerting too much extra burden (Curieux B, 2009). In the end, the author believed that the benefits of genetically modified foods far outweigh the disadvantages. Analysis of the benefits of genetically modified foods Magana’s argument is persuasive when he assessed the risks about GM food. However, since genetic engineering techniques have successfully transferred anti-viral, insect resistance, cold resistance and other genes to cotton, wheat, tomatoes and other plants, we can get stable new varieties of genetically modified, with low production cost and high-yield food, which will ease the world food shortage and reduce the use of pesticides to a large extent. Based on the above reasons, I will provide a critical analysis with the following specific examples which show his argument is partially wrong. Firstly, transgenic technology has also made considerable progress in animal food applications. At present, a variety of mammal and bird genes are successfully integrated into the genome of fish, which can significantly enhance transgenic fish muscle protein content and improve growth speed. With the development of genetic engineering technology, people have been freed from natural enzymes to a large extent. Especially when the enzyme obtained from natural protein material encounters difficulties, genetic engineering has the unique advantages of natural gene cloning (Seralini GE, 2011). Thus, it can be highly expressed in microorganisms with mass production by fermentation. At present, the transgenic enzymes are widely used in the food industry, such as maltose enzymes amylase, pectinase and the juice protease. The food nutritional quality modified by genetic engineering has also made remarkable achievements. For instance, the genetic engineering technology has been applied for seed protein improvement, which renders it possible to change the plant composition and amino acid content. Secondly, transgenic food has successfully lowered food prices and ensured food safety, which helps increase production and food supply while reducing the farm labor and pesticide applications, agricultural inputs and production costs (Weasel LH, 2009). In the future, GM crops have great potential in solving the food crisis. For instance, by applying transgenic technology to the human staple foods of rice and wheat, people can increase food production and improve nutritional quality, which will provide mankind with higher-quality food. Furthermore, GM foods have also proved effective in alleviating poverty and hunger. The world’s poorest 50% of the population are small and resource-poor farmers, while 20% living in rural areas without their own land actually depend on agriculture. Therefore, the increase in small-scale and resource-poor farmers’ income will directly assist 70% of the world’s poorest people (Curieux-Belfond O, 2009). So far, genetically modified cotton in India, China and South Africa have already made a significant contribution to more than 1. 2 million poor farmers’ income. The benefits of genetically modified corn in the Philippines and South Africa will be much clearer in the future. In addition, genetically modified rice has great potential to benefit 250 million poor families in Asia, whose benefits will reach 10 million people (Curieux-Belfond O, 2009). Transgenic food also helps to reduce land development. Transgenic technology has been developed to improve the current 1. 5 billion hectares of arable land productivity through conservation of biological resources, thereby reducing land development and deforestation. Thirdly, I will demonstrate such improvement since they significantly reduce the environmental impact of agriculture. Traditional agriculture has a significant impact on the environment, and transgenic biotechnology can help reduce this impact. In the first decade of application of genetically modified crops, by planting herbicide and insect-resistant characteristics, transgenic technologies have greatly reduced the use of pesticides, saved fossil fuels and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Undoubtedly, genetically modified crops with drought-tolerant genes will improve water-use efficiency and maintain sustainable agricultural development, which will play an important role in easing the crisis of population growth and global food shortage (Artemis D, 2009). GM crops have also contributed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in two main ways, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping slow climate change. First, by reducing fuel use, the spraying of insecticides and herbicides, GM crops continue to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In 2007, genetic engineering has been stated to reduce 1. 1 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to a decrease of 50 million cars from the road. Secondly, herbicide-resistant GM crops help reduce tillage applications, which protects the land and enhances soil carbon sequestration. Conclusions Despite the many advantages of GM food, we cannot ignore the risks. After genetically modified foods have been taken into the human body, they may cause harm to human health. Moreover, after a large number of transgenic crops come into nature, they may be biologically harmful to ecosystems. Since the risks of GM food is serous, it is important for us to reflect on it first. Any of the scientific and technological developments should be comprehensive and provide well-being for human life. If genetically modified foods can only increase our economic interests and improved material life without the moral, social and environmental harmony, they cannot be defined as making great contribution to social development. Therefore, whether GM food is a benefit or a disadvantage really depends on what kind of human values people hold (Qaim M. 2009). That is the question we reflect on deeply. In contemporary society, with the rapid development of science and technology, the economic situation of the human and the material standard of living has been soaring. It seems that mankind is taking great proud for the advanced technology. However, we should look back to what the living environment we rely on is subjected to. Therefore, genetically modified foods are seen as the savior of mankind, which is actually human self-centered ideology. Of course, with the continuous development of biotechnology and genetic engineering, human beings have the ability to create more genetically modified food. Therefore, the drawbacks of genetically modified food are not the technology itself, but rather due to humans themselves. Penelopes Recognition of Odysseus as a Beggar Essay -- World Literatu

In Homer's epic The Odyssey, Odysseus returns to the island of Ithaka disguised as a beggar. He reveals his real identity to his son, Telemakhos, as well as a few others who he would need to help kill the suitors. However, Odysseus does not reveal himself to his wife, Penelope. She recognizes the beggar as her long lost husband and chooses not to unveil his true identity. Penelope does this because she realized that her husband would be in danger, in his current surroundings, if she was to reveal who he really was. Therefore she acts as if she does not know the beggar is Odysseus. However, it is portrayed subtly in the book that she does indeed know that the beggar is her husband. The very first piece of evidence Homer provides that Odysseus would be recognized by his family, is when the old dog recognizes who he was. The dog had been around since Odysseus had set sail on his epic journey. This makes the dog extremely old, and yet it still is able to recognize Odysseus' voice. The fact that the dog recognizes him in disguise so easily foreshadows Penelope's recognition of Odysseus as a beggar. Upon hearing of the travels of the beggar, Penelope is very interested to question him as to whether he has ever crossed paths with her husband Odysseus. The story that Odysseus tells her is for the most part untrue. However, he does give specific details as to what clothes he had worn, so that Penelope would believe that the story was truthful. The beggar then goes on to tell her that Odysseus is coming back to Ithaka in the very near future. It is at this point that Penelope first thought that the beggar could actually be her husband Odysseus, as she was overcome with emotions, and began to cry. From this point on ... ...at if he was not revealing himself to her that there was a good reason for it. Since she knew this, she went along with his act and did not give him away. On numerous occasions she makes comments that would lead one to think that she doesn't know the identity of the beggar, but it is merely the fact that she is highly intelligent and is able to hide what she knows very well. Through all of these examples, it is obvious that Penelope recognized Odysseus to some extent in the beginning, and throughout his time posing as a beggar she became more convinced of his identity. She hides this knowledge only to protect herself and her husband. In this task I will explain why customer service needs to be planned, how this is monitored and what impact it has for the whole organisation. The present customers of the organisation are really important for the organisation and company has to do ‘a step forward’ to make them satisfy and to keep them. If a company has no customers there are no profits for the business. Keeping existing customers is important as finding new ones is time consuming and costly. Planning customer service standards If companies plan their customer service they are more likely to exist in a business environment. Companies which have planned customer service for both; external and internal customers are more likely to be succeeding than others. Setting aims, outlining measurable benchmarks Companies must have standards which are measured and it the targets are not achieved action will be taken. Setting aims Aims are main announcements of what the business wants to achieve. Objectives are targets which are measured to check if they are achieved. Aims and objectives are really important for the business as without them there is no meaning to business. Aim and objectives give meaning to successive activities of planning, directing, staffing, organising and controlling. Methods of setting aims for customer service are wide. It depends on company and what good or service they provide. Some of the businesses have different aims, like providing employment for the owner; increasing sales and production or taking over businesses. Except aims, like making profits, providing goods and services, businesses have to state objectives by which they can get their aims. In example, if a business settled an aim to make a profit, they have to think how to achieve this; they need to set targets to know how much they want to spend and how much they want to receive. These targets should be specific as to what must be achieved; measurable to measure their success and relevant to business aim. A mission statement is a statement which determines a company or organisation. The mission statement must advise any of the organisation’s action. It influences overall success and run decision-making. In the Barclays bank, their aim is to be no. 1 bank in the England. They want to be the best choice for the customers by what they can make more profits and eliminate other banks. The Barclays objective is to provide first class customer service and offer market landing products. To achieve what they want, they use lots of trainings which can improve their skills in area where they need to be improved. This bank mission statement is related with their aims and objectives – ‘To be innovative, customer focused group that delivers superb products and service ensures excellent careers for all people and contributes positively to the communities in which we live and work.’ All of these focused and linked make the bank successful by what they have more customers and more profits. However, step by step they are better. Outlining measurable benchmarks Benchmarks purpose is to set minimum level of service, quality and quantity customer service system must reach in order to meet their objectives. Benchmarks need to be realistic, understandable and measurable. Benchmarking is the process of comparing one’s business processes and performance metrics to industry best practices from other industries. The Barclays can benchmark against another businesses by hiring the best qualified people on positions. They can make the best training for them to improve their skills, do meetings where they can talk about any issues and where they can resolve all of the problems. Make easy accessible entrances and dimensioned halls. Taking phone calls faster, and making good first impression by wearing clean and suit clothes. Quantitative performance indicators are numeric indicators; it includes sales and profit levels – to check if they raised or dropped; speed of service – in what time customer received what they ordered; customer retention; number of complains about staff/service/products; percentage of orders resulting from visits to customers by salespeople and responses to marketing material sent out. Number of complains are counted, products sold to the customers are counted and after it is compared with this amount from previous month to check if there is any improvement. Implementing and monitoring customer care standards A company who want be successful, have to not just set good customer care standards but also monitor it afterwards. Providing staff training on raising customer service standards Lots of businesses now, in which customer service in involved are making at least one day of customer service training on the induction. New staff must be present in training at a head of the organisation or in regional office of the organisation where they will be absorbed customer service in a local level. These training usually involve presenting how to deal with different situations, to learn it there are usually used role plays with different scenarios to know how to deal with problems, complains and different types of customers. When a potential employee finishes his induction, the training still continues in place of work and done with a local staff to make sure that customer service standards are keeping up. I do not think that any improvements are needed in work what they do, as when I worked there for a week all the time targets were met. Measuring and monitoring performance There is wide range of ways how performance can be measured, like sales level; conducting surveys of customers; postage-paid questionnaires/comment cards/forms; make special facilities where customer can give an feedback, for example on the website ‘Contact us’ buttons; occasional telephone calls to customers; personal or telephone interviews; complains about staff/products/services; email customers, for example with surveys; etc. Customer service performance is monitored all the time, to know that customers get what they want and when they want it. This monitoring also has many ways, such as inspection by unknown company staff to witness customer service at first hand; regular staff meeting; mystery shoppers; monitoring telephone conversations; staff appraisals. Performance in the Barclays bank is measured and monitored by making overall report of previous day and showing it in the next day morning meeting. Also, on this meetings there are given sheets to complete out in which employees are able to put feedback of other employees and any other performances. Procedures for handling customer complains All of the businesses need to deal with complains. Most of businesses have special procedures how to deal with them with points to follow. When customer’s problem is resolved it is more likely that he will return. Complains are good way of getting rid of competitors, as when a company handle it successfully, company makes a step forward in customer service. Complains should be handled quickly and sympathy. In the Barclays bank complains are posted into the log system and afterwards if cannot be resolved in a branch, complains are sent out to branch office. Customer information and helplines There are many methods of informing customers, like putting information on the website, notices on displays, making and giving out leaflets and information sheets, frequently asked questions on the website, newsletters, and customer service advice helplines. In the Barclays bank, information is provided by leaflets, on the website, helpline, newsletters, posters, adverts and notices. The Barclays is a huge brand which is recognisable in whole country, so they use wide range methods of providing information and for marketing. Everything is easy to find in a branch as there are signs and staff is wearing identification cards where is also placed on what position they work. Impact on resources All of the companies want their employees to have the best customer service; also they want any issue easy to be resolved. If in some cases poor customer service was identified, like poor knowledge of product provided then more training is needed. It will need additional costs to arrange training and to transport staff in the place where training is provided, also, another cost is to replace the members of staff for the time when they are on training. Other costly thing is investigating complains, as it is time and consuming. Some of the staff members must be involved in resolving problem and records of it need to be completed. When a customer complains about member of a staff, the staff member can get a verbal warning, if it is first time, if not; warning can be written or can be dismissal. Improving communication is also costly, telephones, internet, computers are costly but vey useful. Besides these methods are costly for the first time, a person who has a meeting abroad can do a conference by the computer, not traveling, what saves time. The last one costly thing is improvement in physical structure of the building, for example, making things more accessible for disabled people, making lifts, automatic doors, etc. In the Barclays bank in recruiting new staff, the potential employees need to show that they are confident, punctual and have outstanding potentials. Involving new staff involves assessments which are afterwards scored. Firstly, when somebody is interesting in a position in Barclays bank, he needs to apply online, when his application form is successful he needs to get through telephone assessment, when he pass it, he is invited to the branch for an interview.
